Flash Forward, in all its award-winning formats, has been a life-changing career boost for young photographers since its inception 15 years ago. This program for supporting and encouraging emerging artists in Canada and worldwide began with an idea to invest in artists barely out of university. This small idea has turned into a platform widely recognized and praised and this original program has helped paved the way for a high school program to influence arts curriculums, change and encourage leadership in teachers and keep essential funds in high schools. The pool of Flash Forward jurors are some of the most influential photo editors, curators and industry leaders in the world. With an open call for artists, our target is to be inclusive and support diversity, making minorities, LGBTQ, women, new immigrants and anyone living in a disadvantaged community, able to participate.
—The Flash Forward program also helps Magenta educate our extension of the program, the Flash Forward Incubator. Here, we use many of the works of the photographers in our classes as stellar examples of the next rising art stars. In each program, encouraging and inspiring emerging artists and giving them the essential tools to succeed is our desired outcome.

Flash Forward Flash Back
Beyond continuing to feature past and present Flash Forward winners through profiles and highlights, the site will also invite guest editors to present their coup de cœur, that is the photographers whose work they admire, host discussions with practitioners around questions relating to the medium and its usages, and list some of the incredible new projects, commissions, exhibitions and publications. As we evolve, we hope you’ll return to see the new content and exciting features we’re working on.
