Series: Maiden, Mother, Crone

I use lens-based media to investigate historical and contemporary narratives that are driven by themes of labor, femininity, and power. In Maiden, Mother, Crone, I am exploring my relationship with my mother, a self-proclaimed Wiccan. My practice is research based, using both oral and written representations of Witchcraft to source my photographs. Texts such as the Malleus Maleficarum were pivotal manifestos for the persecution of witches. I am interested in how these texts are in discourse with European folklore and paganism. In my Austrian upbringing, there was a strong presence of Alpine Folklore intersecting with Christianity. I am interested in reimagining the ever-present horror in this history in order to deconstruct the demonization of femininity—my mother’s spirituality being at the heart of the work.
