In 2016 I traveled to Lugo, Italy to make a body of work about the area. To contend with being a stranger in this nondescript town I created my own, fictionalized Lugo. I allowed the experience of living there—the things I ate, purchased, and witnessed—determine the subjects of the photographs. I superimposed my imagination on the surrounding environment, flecked with elements of real, Romagna foods that I generously transformed into imagined scenes.
I relied on Lugo itself to provide a backdrop for the still-life tableaus. I slipped in the occasional homage to ancient Roman traditions of cooking and dining, though the ingredients are plucked from the rich sensory stimuli of moving about the town.
