Events at the end of the 20th century led to a notable shift in our shared vision of the future. Ideas of infinite industrial and technological progress were replaced with pessimistic forebodings. These real-world anxieties have been reflected in the media and experiences we choose to consume for entertainment. This growing sense of unease has crept into all aspects of popular culture; from literature to cinema, video games to theatre, live-action experiences to entire themed festivals. Offering participants not just total immersion into any number of post-apocalyptic fantasies but also a way to process and deal with an uncertain future. On the surface, each has been created for recreational purposes but the increasing prevalence of these narratives says something about our contemporary condition.
